The Walking Dead: Dead City cast and creative team revealed major Season 3 details during the show’s Comic-Con 2026 panel.
Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan appeared alongside Aimee Garcia, Raúl Castillo, showrunner Seth Hoffman, and Walking Dead Universe Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple.
Hoffman said the new season was designed to capture the emotional range of the original Walking Dead series.
He explained that each episode should contain humor, sadness, beauty, fear, and unusual moments that make viewers feel something.
Season 3 will include more comedy, but Hoffman warned that the story will also become extremely dark in places.
One of the biggest changes involves the relationship between Maggie and Negan.
Morgan said the characters had remained trapped in the same hostile position for a long time and needed to move into a different phase.
He acknowledged that Maggie had every reason to hate Negan, but their repeated conflict had begun limiting where the story could go.
The shift will allow Maggie and Negan to explore situations that were not possible during the first two seasons.
Morgan also said Negan had lost some of the edge that once defined him.
Season 3 will allow the character to become more like his old self while his relationship with Maggie gradually softens.
Cohan described Maggie’s previous survival strategy as defensive.
The new season will push her toward a more proactive approach as she begins to accept that her son, Hershel, needs room to grow.
Cohan said Maggie’s rage had started destroying her and was no longer helping her honor Glenn or provide the life Hershel needed.
Her encounters with new characters, Renata and Luis, introduce the possibility of hope, change, and a future beyond constant conflict.
Garcia plays Renata, the leader of a multigenerational Latino family that has lived in New York for generations.
Renata’s family chooses celebration, music, and hope rather than allowing the apocalypse to rob them of their humanity.
Garcia also incorporated Spanish dialogue into the family’s interactions to reflect her bilingual background and the characters’ culture.
Castillo plays Luis, a doctor whose skills make him especially valuable in the apocalypse.
Luis develops a mentor relationship with Hershel as the younger character begins training to become a doctor.
That connection carries additional meaning because Hershel’s grandfather was also a doctor.
Jimmy Simpson joins the season as Dillard, a man who has survived alone inside a bar for approximately a decade.
Dillard has removed the teeth and nails from two walkers and treats them as companions to protect himself from complete isolation.
Hoffman described the character as funny, frightening, strange, beautiful, and sad.
Morgan said Simpson brought something completely new to The Walking Dead universe and rarely performed a scene the same way twice.
The panel’s biggest surprise came when Cohan confirmed that Emily Kinney will return as Beth Greene.
Beth will appear in a full alternate-reality episode in which the zombie apocalypse never happened.
The episode explores how the characters’ lives might have developed under completely different circumstances.
Gimple admitted that he was initially unsure about dedicating an entire episode to an alternate reality.
He changed his opinion after seeing how the story connected to the season’s themes and provided a deeper look inside the characters’ minds.
Morgan jokingly called it their Hallmark episode because it takes place around Christmas.
He said the episode still connects directly to the main story and contains clues about Maggie and Negan’s current situation.
Gimple also confirmed during the panel that The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will return for its fourth and final season in 2027.
