“As a principle, we do not intend to sell hardware at significant losses.”
The issue is tied to the broader pressure on memory and storage prices. Demand for high-bandwidth memory used in artificial intelligence systems has increased costs across the tech industry, creating challenges for console makers.
Sony has already felt that pressure during the current generation. The company raised PlayStation 5 prices in several regions earlier this year, pointing to ongoing global economic challenges.
Microsoft has also responded to similar cost issues. Xbox hardware prices have risen again after the company warned that console memory and storage costs had risen sharply.
Nishino said Sony is still trying to balance customer value with financial sustainability. He also made it clear that the company is closely watching the market.
“At the same time, we are carefully monitoring the market and continuing to evaluate our approach. We believe it is important for us to make every effort to ensure that customers fully understand the value we provide in relation to pricing.”
Those comments have added more attention to Sony’s next-generation plans. Nishino did not directly mention PlayStation 6, but the pricing discussion comes at a time when many fans are already worried that Sony’s next console could be its most expensive yet.
He also referenced devices like PlayStation Portal and Sony’s larger goal of expanding gaming beyond the living room. That has only fueled speculation that future PlayStation hardware could include a handheld or hybrid-style device.
Higher console prices may already be affecting demand. Recent U.S. sales data showed PlayStation 5 hardware spending dropped sharply year over year in May, while Xbox hardware also hit major lows after price increases.
Sony has not announced when PlayStation 6 will launch. Reports have suggested that semiconductor and memory shortages could affect next-generation timing, but nothing official has been confirmed.
For now, Sony appears focused on protecting margins instead of returning to the old model of heavily subsidizing console hardware. That means players may bear a larger share of the cost if hardware prices keep rising.
