GTA VI May Trigger Console Shortage

Retailers expect PS5 and Xbox demand to surge near launch

Summary

– GTA VI could drive a major spike in PS5 and Xbox Series X/S sales near launch

– A retailer reportedly warned that demand may outpace console supply during the year-end period

– Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox price increase could push some buyers to upgrade before August

Grand Theft Auto VI may create a console rush before it even arrives.

A new report from The Game Business says retailers are preparing for stronger demand for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S hardware around the release of GTA VI. The concern is that stores may not receive enough consoles to keep up with demand.

Christopher Dring said a major games retailer was told to expect stock shortages near the launch window. A senior games buyer also said ongoing hardware component issues could limit the number of units available before the holiday season.

That timing matters because GTA VI is expected to push many players toward current-generation consoles. The game is launching on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, with no PS4 or Xbox One version planned.

Sony has tried to calm supply concerns. Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki previously told investors that the company secured the necessary PlayStation 5 volume for 2026.

Xbox appears to be facing more pressure. Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball said demand for Microsoft’s consoles already exceeds supply in some markets.

Ball also said GTA VI should energize players and move additional devices. That makes the launch window a major test for both platform holders.

Pricing could make the situation even more complicated. Microsoft announced that the prices of Xbox Series X and Series S will increase by $150 starting August 1, 2026.

That may convince some players to buy early rather than wait until November. Others may hold off until closer to GTA VI’s release, which could make holiday stock harder to find.

GTA VI launches on November 19. The Standard Edition is priced at $79.99, while the Ultimate Edition is priced at $99.99.

Pre-loads begin on November 12, giving players a week to prepare before launch. Anyone who still needs a console may not want to wait until the final rush.

The report suggests GTA VI will not only dominate software sales. It may also become the year’s biggest hardware driver.
