Rey Mysterio’s night in Paris ended shockingly after a respectful championship match turned into a brutal post-match attack.
The WWE Hall of Famer challenged Penta for the Intercontinental Championship during the June 8 episode of WWE RAW at Accor Arena in Paris, France. The match was built around respect, with Penta giving Mysterio the title opportunity to test himself against one of the greatest luchadores in wrestling history.
Penta entered the match with strong momentum after winning the Intercontinental Championship from Dominik Mysterio on the March 2 episode of RAW. His reign continued in Paris, but he had to survive a strong challenge from Rey.
Mysterio and Penta opened the match with fast-paced offense that quickly drew the Paris crowd into the match. Rey connected with a dive to the outside, and fans later chanted “lucha libre” as the two continued trading momentum.
Mysterio came close to victory after hitting a poisonrana and a 6-1-9, but Penta stayed alive. The champion answered back after a striking exchange and landed a Mexican Destroyer to retain the Intercontinental Championship.
The celebration did not last long. Ethan Page and Rusev stormed the ring after the match and attacked both Penta and Mysterio.
Dragon Lee ran down to help, but he was quickly overwhelmed. Page took him out, while Rusev continued the assault on Mysterio.
The attack escalated when Rusev removed Mysterio’s mask, creating one of the most disrespectful moments of the night. Penta quickly protected Rey’s face from the crowd as the scene unfolded.
Chad Gable then rushed out to fight off the attackers. While he is no longer working as El Grande Americano, Gable still stood with the luchadors when they needed help.
The attack leaves several questions unanswered in RAW. Penta kept his championship, but the disrespect shown to Mysterio may have opened the door to a much bigger fight.
