Flashpoint talks hinted at a bigger Thomas Wayne role
Summary
– Jeffrey Dean Morgan says Zack Snyder teased bigger plans for Thomas Wayne
– Their conversations included the possibility of Morgan playing Batman
– The proposed Flashpoint role never reached the screen
Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s brief appearance as Thomas Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice came with the suggestion that something bigger could follow.
Speaking with Josh Horowitz on Happy Sad Confused, Morgan recalled Zack Snyder asking him to play Bruce Wayne’s father. Morgan recognized that the opening sequence offered little screen time, but Snyder encouraged him to think beyond that appearance.
“I was like, ‘It’s really nothing.’ And he was like, ‘I’ve got bigger plans.’”
When Morgan asked what those plans involved, Snyder requested his trust. Morgan said he would have accepted the part even without the possibility of a larger role.
The idea of Morgan playing Batman had come up before. He recalled discussing the character with Snyder during the Watchmen press tour, when the director told him he would love to see him take on the role.
Morgan remembered being thrilled by the suggestion. Later, Snyder mentioned Flashpoint, giving those conversations a more specific direction.
The comic storyline follows an altered timeline created by the Flash’s interference with the past. In that reality, Thomas Wayne becomes Batman, offering Morgan a potential path to return in a substantially different role.
Fans quickly connected his casting to that possibility. Morgan said the speculation was immediate, although his recollections describe private conversations rather than an announced film agreement.
He also expressed surprise that Snyder’s relationship with Warner Bros. did not continue, praising the darker tone of the director’s work while making clear that he appreciates James Gunn as well.
Warner Bros. eventually released The Flash in 2023, drawing on elements of Flashpoint. That film brought Michael Keaton back as Bruce Wayne rather than introducing Morgan’s Thomas Wayne as Batman.
Morgan’s appearance ultimately remained a brief part of Batman v Superman, leaving the larger role Snyder had discussed unrealized.
