Patrick Clark Jr., formerly known in WWE as Velveteen Dream, was disqualified from his boxing match against Ryan Pownall after the fight repeatedly crossed over into wrestling-style chaos.
Clark faced Pownall during the Duel Arena 1 main card at Orlando’s Kia Center on August 29. The former NXT North American Champion was introduced using both his real name and his Velveteen Dream wrestling identity.
Pownall made an unusual entrance to Kanye West’s “Runaway” while accompanied by a little person dressed as Kanye. Andrew Tate was also introduced as a special commentator for the bout.
Both fighters came out aggressively once the opening bell sounded, immediately exchanging fast punches without much of a feeling-out process. Clark quickly backed Pownall toward the ropes, forcing the referee to separate them.
The action became increasingly difficult to control as the round continued. Clark and Pownall became tangled near the ropes before both men went through the second rope and landed outside the ring.
Things did not settle down during the second round. Clark used a headlock that required another referee’s intervention before continuing to battle Pownall around the ropes.
Clark eventually launched Pownall through the ropes and onto the floor. The referee deducted a point for the illegal move and gave Clark a warning about his conduct.
The warning did not prevent another incident. After the fighters became tangled near the ropes again, Clark shoved Pownall through them and sent him outside the ring for a second time.
That proved to be the final straw. The referee immediately stopped the bout and disqualified Clark, awarding Pownall the victory.
The unusual finish followed an already heated buildup between the two men. Their pre-fight press conference had previously turned physical, requiring security to separate Clark from Pownall.
Clark ultimately brought plenty of his professional wrestling instincts into the boxing ring, but repeatedly throwing his opponent outside the ropes ultimately cost him the fight.
