Logan Kim Says Hershel’s Past Will Always Stay With Him

The Dead City star explains how Maggie and Luis are helping Hershel move forward

Summary

– Logan Kim says Hershel cannot erase everything he has experienced

– Luis has become a mentor and father figure for Hershel

– Maggie and Hershel are rebuilding their relationship in Season 3

Hershel Rhee Jr. may be finding a healthier path during The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3, but Logan Kim does not believe his character can leave the past behind.

Speaking with CBR, Kim explained that Hershel has experienced too much for those memories ever to disappear fully. He said the character has matured enough to understand what he has been through, even if those darker experiences will always remain part of him.

Season 3 has also brought Hershel and Maggie closer after the tension that defined much of their relationship in Season 2. Kim pointed to their conversations about Hershel Greene’s pocket watch as an example of mother and son reconnecting and developing a better understanding of each other.

Luis has also become an important influence on Hershel. Kim described him as a mentor and something close to a father figure, giving Hershel a type of guidance he has largely been without after growing up without Glenn.

That relationship has become especially important as Hershel learns medicine. Kim explained that Hershel has spent his entire life surrounded by death and has become somewhat numb to it because of the world he grew up in.

Now that Hershel is trying to save people, he has to accept that not everyone can be saved. Luis helps him understand that reality because he has faced similar challenges himself and can guide Hershel through both the medical and emotional sides of the job.

Hershel’s interest in medicine also connects to his family history. Maggie’s father was a doctor, and Kim said Hershel stepping into that role feels reminiscent of his grandfather, even if Hershel may not fully understand that connection yet.

Kim believes one of the biggest changes is that Hershel no longer feels the same pressure from Maggie that he did in previous seasons. Their relationship has improved enough that he can begin making his own choices and figuring out who he wants to become.

Dead City Season 3 is not ignoring everything Hershel has survived, but it is allowing him to grow beyond it. With Maggie rebuilding their bond and Luis offering guidance, Hershel is beginning to move forward without pretending the past never happened.
