The former Intercontinental Champion faced Laredo Kid in a fast-paced opening-round match.
The two competitors were familiar with each other after sharing the ring more than 25 times throughout their careers. However, this marked only their third one-on-one encounter.
Laredo Kid nearly secured the victory after hitting a Poisonrana followed by a 450 Splash, but Penta kicked out at two.
Penta responded with a backstabber and later connected with the Penta Driver, but Laredo Kid also survived.
After Laredo Kid missed another aerial attack, Penta delivered a Mexican Destroyer and scored the three-count.
The victory moved Penta into the next round of the tournament, where he will face the winner of Psycho Clown versus La Parka.
Neither Penta nor Laredo Kid has previously challenged for a world championship in WWE.
The tournament winner will earn an opportunity to challenge Roman Reigns for the World Championship.
