Summary

– Kiefer Sutherland reveals a deleted scene in The Lost Boys where his character devours a man’s head

– The actor blames himself for David’s mullet, inspired by Billy Idol and the punk scene

– The Lost Boys continues to be a cult classic with Sutherland’s David as an iconic pop culture villain

Kiefer Sutherland’s career has spanned numerous acclaimed roles, with his turn as David in The Lost Boys remaining one of the most iconic. Released in 1987, Joel Schumacher’s vampire comedy put a punk rock spin on blood-sucking monsters, creating a cult classic.

Sutherland recently revealed a particularly gory scene that was filmed but didn’t make the final cut. Speaking with Yahoo! Entertainment, he described a moment where David devours a man’s head from the back, resulting in a disturbing visual of blood splattering everywhere. “It was like a cake,” Sutherland said, recalling how director Joel Schumacher instructed him to smile like a child enjoying dessert. The scene, deemed too extreme, was ultimately edited out.

Another defining feature of Sutherland’s portrayal was David’s striking mullet and bleached hair. While the style became iconic, Sutherland admitted in an interview with GQ that the hairstyle wasn’t intentional. Inspired by Billy Idol, he combined spiky punk elements with longer hair at the back, inadvertently creating one of the most infamous hairstyles of the 1980s.

Despite its camp and gore, The Lost Boys endures as a cultural phenomenon, with Sutherland’s David remaining a touchstone for cinematic villains. The film is available to rent on Apple TV, offering fans another look at the rebellious style and unforgettable performances that made it legendary.
