Nyla Rose Faces Regulatory Challenges in Oklahoma for Wrestling Cisgender Women

Summary

– The Oklahoma State Athletic Commission has issued a warning to AEW regarding transgender wrestler Nyla Rose competing against cisgender women.

– Nyla Rose, a former AEW Women’s Champion, responded to the warning on social media amidst discussions of updating wrestling applications in the state.

– The controversy arose from a match featuring Rose that aired on ROH television, which the Commission views as violating current regulations.

The Oklahoma State Athletic Commission (OSAC) has formally warned All Elite Wrestling (AEW) about the participation of Nyla Rose, a transgender woman, in matches against cisgender women within the state. This decision follows a match on December 20 during AEW’s Dynamite/Rampage event, where Rose competed against Alejandra Lion, a match that later aired on ROH television.

OSAC Administrator Jim Miller reported that he had contacted AEW to inform them of the violation according to OSAC’s existing rules. The issue was raised during the commission’s January meeting, where it was decided that AEW would face punitive actions if similar incidents occurred. Mike Bower, chairman of the OSAC, also highlighted the discrepancy in application forms between wrestling and other sports like boxing and MMA, which do inquire about gender reassignment surgery. He recommended updating the wrestling application forms accordingly.

Nyla Rose, a prominent figure in AEW since its inception in 2019 and who has held the AEW Women’s Championship, took to social media to address the warning. Her response on X (formerly known as Twitter) has drawn attention to the ongoing debate over the inclusion of transgender athletes in professional sports.

This situation places AEW at the center of a regulatory and ethical discussion, reflecting broader societal debates regarding transgender participation in sports. As AEW navigates this complex issue, the wrestling community and regulatory bodies will likely continue scrutinizing the promotion’s adherence to local regulations and its support for inclusivity.
