Twitch Cracks Down on Fake Rockstar Channel Promising GTA 6 Beta Access

Scam Channel Peaks at 20K Viewers Before Ban

In the ever-growing anticipation for the next installment of the Grand Theft Auto series, a fake Rockstar Games channel on Twitch tried to capitalize on the hype. This scam channel branded itself as “newsrockstar” and even sported the iconic Rockstar logo, falsely offered GTA 6 beta access codes. The stream, misleadingly titled “GTA6 Out Now! Beta Early Access – Beta Test Twitch and Steam Exclusive”, managed to attract over 20,000 viewers before Twitch intervened.

The channel’s audacious approach didn’t stop at just mimicking Rockstar’s branding. StreamCharts said the channel was live for over five hours before it faced the ban hammer. Adding to the intrigue, the Twitter account StreamerBans pointed out that this was a partnered Twitch account, originally created back in 2013. This partnership status allowed the channel to flaunt a verification badge, further misleading viewers into believing its legitimacy.

However, the channel’s intentions were far from benign. It was a phishing scheme designed to steal Steam accounts. The scam likely operated by directing viewers to a link where they would unwittingly provide their Steam login details. This would grant the scammers access to personal and potentially financial information.

As of now, there’s no additional information on the aftermath of this situation. But this incident serves as a stark reminder for fans and gamers to be cautious and verify the authenticity of such claims, especially when they seem too good to be true.
