The wrestling landscape is poised for a potential seismic shift as WWE seeks the most lucrative deal in their upcoming television negotiations. With two major players emerging as potential suitors, fans might be in for significant programming changes, especially with whispers of FOX possibly stepping back from WWE broadcasts.

The imminent end of WWE’s television contract with Fox has sparked rumors about the future of its Friday night spectacle, SmackDown. Adding fuel to the fire, Fox’s recent decision to cancel the “Out of Character” WWE podcast is seen by many as a precursor to SmackDown’s potential departure from the network.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter highlighted this, pointing out that despite SmackDown’s impressive ratings, the show might not be a cost-effective choice for Fox. The newsletter elaborated on the potential implications of a move:

> “If SmackDown transitions to FX, a Friday slot might not be the best fit. With a hefty annual price tag of over $300 million, FX would aim for more than just AEW Dynamite-like numbers. A shift to Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday could maximize viewership. However, this would also necessitate a reshuffling of other wrestling shows, like NXT.”

The report further speculated on the best days for SmackDown, considering both viewership and competition. While a Tuesday slot seems convenient for WWE, it could mean moving NXT to another day. A Wednesday slot would pit SmackDown directly against AEW, a move that could be detrimental to both shows. The ultimate decision would also hinge on the preferences of the USA network, which airs NXT.

Another intriguing development is the recent spotting of WWE’s Triple H with Amazon’s Jeff Bezos during New York Fashion Week. Could this hint at a potential collaboration with Amazon Prime?

Historically, WWE has shown flexibility with SmackDown’s scheduling, and they’re open to change once again. The primary goal? Positioning the blue brand for optimal viewership, regardless of the day.
