The Silver Lining of WrestleMania’s Main Event: Sami Zayn Opens Up

Reflecting on the historic moment and the bittersweet journey leading up to it

WWE Undisputed Tag Team Champion, Sami Zayn, recently sat down with Ryan Satin on episode 123 of “Out of Character.” The candid conversation revolved around Zayn’s experience in the Main Event of WrestleMania and how it softened the blow of his defeat to Roman Reigns at the Elimination Chamber.

“I don’t have bad things to say about anything involving that story,” Zayn began. “But if you’re asking me if it was tough to swallow coming so close and not quite making it? I’d be lying if I said no, it didn’t bother me at all.”

However, his subsequent Main Event appearance significantly lessened the sting of that loss. “Main Eventing in WrestleMania kind of helped with that sting a lot,” Zayn admitted. “By the end of the night, I was well… no, that’s not true. I didn’t bounce back right away. It still lingered a little bit, this feeling of disappointment.”

But the historic nature of the match, where the tag titles were the main event – a first in WWE history – made it all the more special. “That’s a real testament to the storyline,” Zayn emphasized. “It’s almost harder to do than main eventing in a singles story because you’re breaking ground on something that just didn’t exist before.”

Drawing a parallel, Zayn mentioned the groundbreaking main event featuring Becky, Rhonda, and Charlotte a few years ago. “They carved out a space that didn’t exist before,” he said. “And while that was even more historic because it transcended gender limitations, our match did something slightly akin to that. It carved out something that didn’t exist before, and that’s very special.”
