WWE NXT’s Battleground Takes a Hit in Viewership Amidst AEW’s Double or Nothing Clash

0

WWE NXT’s Battleground premium live event found itself in a head-to-head clash with All Elite Wrestling’s Double or Nothing pay-per-view this past Sunday night. According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, this competition led to a significant drop in viewership for Battleground.

The Battleground event, which took place at the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell in Lowell, Massachusetts, was headlined by Carmelo Hayes retaining the NXT Championship against former titleholder Bron Breakker. The event also saw Tiffany Stratton defeat Lyra Valkyria to win the NXT Women’s Championship tournament and capture the vacant belt.

On the other hand, Double or Nothing aired from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event featured Blackpool Combat Club’s Jon Moxley, Wheeler Yuta, reigning ROH World Champion Claudio Castagnoli, and Bryan Danielson defeating The Elite’s Kenny Omega, Matt Jackson, Nick Jackson, and Hangman Adam Page in an Anarchy in the Arena match. Additionally, Jade Cargill’s 508-day reign as AEW TBS Champion came to an end at the event.

WWE’s Senior Vice President of Talent Development Creative, Shawn Michaels, had previously spoken about Battleground going up against Double or Nothing in March. He indicated that holidays are always significant days for the promotion. Interestingly, Tony Khan’s promotion has been running its Double or Nothing pay-per-view during Memorial Day weekend since 2019. WWE also chose to present its Night of Champions premium live event the day before Battleground and Double or Nothing.”
