WWE Earns Huge Payday for Hosting Backlash Event in Puerto Rico

Under the leadership of Triple H, WWE’s Premium Live Events have undergone major transformations in the past year. The next event on the calendar is Backlash, which is set to take place this week in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with Bad Bunny serving as the host.

This marks the first WWE Premium Live Event in Puerto Rico since New Year’s Revolution in January 2005. Fans eagerly anticipate the event, which will be held at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot on May 6th.

According to a Wrestlenomics’ Brandon Thurston report, WWE was paid $1.5 million to bring Backlash to Puerto Rico. The Rico Convention Center District Authority (PRCDA) and the Puerto Rico Tourism Company reportedly paid the sum.

WWE President and CEO Nick Khan confirmed the report during the Q1 2023 earnings call, stating that WWE “received a 7-figure subsidy” for Backlash. Khan’s comments appear to back up Thurston’s reporting, including a government official’s on-record comment.

The Backlash Premium Live Event promises to be an exciting one, with Bad Bunny set to square off against Damian Priest in a San Juan Street fight, while Brock Lesnar will face off against Cody Rhodes in a highly anticipated matchup. WWE’s recent changes to their Premium Live Events have generated significant buzz among fans, and Backlash in Puerto Rico could be a sign of even more exciting things to come.
