Hey fellow gamers! According to a recent report from Tom Henderson at Inside Gaming, Sony is again planning a mid-generation upgrade for their PlayStation console, with the development of the PS5 Pro underway.
Sony will first release a PS5 with a detachable disc drive later this year to cut down on current PS5 costs. The PS5 Pro, however, is expected to be a separate unit that may be available by late 2024. Interestingly, the report also suggests that Sony has yet to make plans for a PS6 before 2028.
The timing adds up when looking back at the release dates of previous PlayStation models. A holiday 2024 release date would be a year later than the Pro upgrade for the PS4 generation. And a 2028 PS6 would be one more year past the PS4 generation length.
As for the pricing, it remains to be seen whether or not there will be multiple versions of the PS5 Pro or if everything is getting an “optional” disc drive model going forward. However, it’s likely to be at most $500.
Although there are no concrete details about the upgrade package for the PS5 Pro, there is talk about increasing ray-tracing capabilities, better visuals, performance, and speed. But we’ll have to wait and see what exactly is included.
It’s hard to say if upgrading to the PS5 Pro will be worth it, but the PS4 to PS4 Pro leap was solid, although less significant than the Xbox One to Xbox One X jump. It’s also unclear if Microsoft will release a mid-generation upgrade, but most hardware rumors have been about a streaming box.
Recently, Sony released the PSVR 2, which received high praise from VR enthusiasts. However, it remains to be seen if the market will be receptive to another VR headset, especially with the niche VR-based metaverse concepts fading fast.
While many gamers are calling for Sony to get back into the portable console game, there have yet to be any indications that this is in the cards for now.
