World War Z is preparing to merge two major zombie franchises with the release of its upcoming collaboration with AMC’s The Walking Dead. The crossover DLC is scheduled to launch on January 29 across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
The DLC introduces a brand-new campaign set in the world of The Walking Dead. Players will experience three story-driven missions set in familiar locations, including the Prison, the Alexandria Safe Zone, and Grady Memorial Hospital. Each mission blends World War Z’s large-scale action with the slower, more methodical threat associated with Walkers.
Playable characters include Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon, Negan, and Michonne, with Andrew Lincoln and Norman Reedus returning to voice their respective roles. Each character comes equipped with signature weapons, allowing players to fight through the campaign using tools closely tied to their on-screen identities.
According to developer Saber Interactive, the goal was to preserve the tone of both franchises while introducing meaningful gameplay changes. World War Z’s fast-moving Zekes have been reworked into Walkers for this campaign, marking a notable shift in how enemies behave and how players must approach combat.
The update also introduces a new enemy type, the Spiked Walker. This heavily armored variant requires a tactical approach, forcing players to knock it down and finish it with a precise melee attack before it can recover.
The crossover was first revealed in December alongside confirmation that World War Z has surpassed 30 million players worldwide since its original 2019 release. Saber Interactive views the collaboration as an opportunity to welcome The Walking Dead fans into the game while delivering fresh content for longtime players.
