AMC team once considered bringing Rick, Michonne, Daryl, and Carol together again
Summary
– A Walking Dead reunion series featuring major characters had been discussed for years
– The idea surfaced before the Rick and Michonne series The Ones Who Live was created
– The franchise continues expanding with new seasons of Daryl Dixon and Dead City
Plans for a large-scale reunion series in The Walking Dead universe were reportedly discussed for several years before AMC moved forward with The Ones Who Live.
Greg Nicotero, who serves as a prosthetic artist, director, and executive producer within the franchise, revealed the idea during an appearance on The Brandon Davis Show. According to Nicotero, conversations took place about bringing together several of the show’s most recognizable characters.
The concept involved reuniting figures such as Rick Grimes, Michonne, Daryl Dixon, and Carol Peletier. Other major survivors from the franchise could also have been involved in a large-scale story tied to the ongoing battle against the Civic Republic Military.
Nicotero explained that these discussions began even before development started on The Ones Who Live, the limited series that eventually continued Rick’s story. The creative team ultimately decided to focus directly on Rick and Michonne rather than building a larger reunion project.
The goal behind that decision was to give fans closure on Rick’s journey. The storyline allowed viewers to finally learn what happened after the character disappeared from the original series.
The Ones Who Live delivered that conclusion through a six-episode run. The story ended with Rick reuniting with Michonne and his daughter Judith after the destruction of the Civic Republic Military, giving the character a long-awaited resolution.
Early conversations also considered turning Rick’s return into a feature film instead of a television series. Those plans eventually shifted toward a shorter, limited series format, which Nicotero said felt like the right way to tell the story.
The Walking Dead universe remains active despite the conclusion of Rick’s arc. Production has already wrapped on the fourth season of the Daryl Dixon series, which is expected to arrive in 2026.
Another spin-off, Dead City, continues expanding the franchise. The third season of that series is currently filming, keeping several major characters active within the wider post-apocalyptic world.
