The Walking Dead: Dead City returned to Worcester on Monday. The series began another week of filming that will continue through Thursday. Crews arrived for their third straight month of production in the city. Local officials said the team may return again in December. The latest shoot brings more street closures, set construction, and zombie themed effects to the downtown area.
Tuesday’s schedule included a full closure of Main Street from Foster Street to MLK Boulevard. Smoke machines filled an alley off Mechanic Street as crews prepared an exterior shot. The production team built a detailed backdrop for the scene. Prop dumpsters. debris. and weathered set pieces were arranged to match the tone of the series. A walker ignition sequence involving Logan Kim and Raul Castillo was among the planned moments for the day.
Fans hoping for star sightings encountered a quieter start on Monday morning. The early call time and cold weather kept the sidewalks clear. Last year and earlier this season. Jeffrey Dean Morgan brought out crowds of supporters during his appearances. His background in several major television roles has helped make him a consistent fan favorite. The latest shoot drew a smaller group. but those who waited were rewarded.
Lauren Cohan arrived at 12:35 p.m. and greeted the group with photos and smiles. Morgan arrived shortly afterward and paused for autographs before heading to set. Security eventually moved the crowd aside. but the twenty or so fans in attendance had their moment with the cast.
Commercial Street received one of the most dramatic transformations for the shoot. A New York City bus and graffiti marked the roadway. while additional debris. leaves. and scattered props completed the look. The building at 250 Commercial Street. home to Cumulus Broadcasting and local radio stations. was covered with boarded windows and weathered exterior details to mimic a post-apocalyptic environment. Mike Hsu of The Pike WWFX captured video of a controlled fire stunt from a higher floor of the building.
The 95 year old Exchange Building at 311 Main Street also underwent a major redesign. The exterior was converted into The Haven. a fictional New York restaurant and nightclub. A red spray painted update renamed the location “Hell” for the episode sequence. Worcester continues to serve as a key setting for Dead City. and the latest shoot reinforces its role as one of the show’s most reliable stand in locations.
