Robert Kirkman, the creator of the original comic series, recently addressed those rumors while speaking with MovieWeb. Although he did not confirm any plans for a large-scale crossover event, he acknowledged that the idea is something many people involved with the franchise would love to see.
According to Kirkman, organizing such a project would be extremely complicated. Many of the characters from the original series have moved into their own spin-off shows, each with its own cast and production schedule.
Several of those spin-offs have become successful in their own right. The Walking Dead: Dead City, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, and The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live all continue exploring different parts of the story while focusing on specific characters from the original series.
Because those productions operate independently, coordinating a large crossover would require aligning multiple actors, storylines, and filming schedules. Kirkman explained that the logistical challenges alone could make the idea difficult to execute.
Despite those obstacles, the concept of a massive reunion has gained attention in the past. Longtime franchise producer Scott Gimple previously suggested he would eventually like to bring the different stories together in a single event.
Gimple has described the current spin-offs as building blocks that could one day connect. While nothing has been confirmed, he hinted that small story elements could eventually lead toward a larger crossover moment.
The Walking Dead franchise has already brought characters back together before. One major example came when Andrew Lincoln returned as Rick Grimes in The Ones Who Live after leaving the main series years earlier.
Even if a universe-wide crossover never materializes, the franchise continues to expand with multiple ongoing projects and spin-offs. Kirkman also remains active with other adaptations of his work.
One of those projects is the animated series Invincible, which will return with its fourth season on Prime Video on March 18. The show features a voice cast that includes Steven Yeun, J.K. Simmons, Sandra Oh, and Gillian Jacobs.
For now, the possibility of a massive Walking Dead crossover remains an idea rather than a confirmed plan, but the concept continues to intrigue fans of the long-running franchise.
