Sony begins rollout of major performance enhancement for select users
Summary
– Sony rolling out free PS5 Pro update improving PSSR technology
– Enhanced feature already live in Resident Evil Requiem
– Upgrade improves image clarity, lighting, and frame performance
Sony has started rolling out a free update for PlayStation 5 Pro users that brings a significant upgrade to its PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology. While the broader release is scheduled for March, part of the enhancement is already available in select titles.
The update focuses on refining PSSR, the console’s proprietary upscaling solution. Similar in concept to other image reconstruction technologies, PSSR allows games to render at lower internal resolutions while delivering sharper visuals at higher output resolutions. This helps maintain smooth performance while targeting 4K output and 60 frames per second.
Resident Evil Requiem is the first title confirmed to feature the upgraded PSSR implementation. Players using a PS5 Pro can activate the new improvements via the “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” option in the console settings.
According to Capcom, the enhanced version of its RE Engine leverages updated technology to improve character detail and lighting. Individual strands of hair are rendered with greater precision, reacting more naturally to movement and environmental effects. Lighting behavior has also been refined, creating more realistic interactions with layered textures.
The improvements stem from Sony’s collaboration with AMD, incorporating advancements tied to newer FSR technology. The goal is to strengthen both image stability and overall presentation without sacrificing performance.
Additional games are expected to adopt the improved PSSR framework later this month. With upcoming releases on the horizon, Sony appears focused on delivering a noticeable quality-of-life boost for PS5 Pro players as they head into a busy year.
