According to VGChartz estimates, the PlayStation 5 was the top-selling console worldwide for September 2025, moving 1,156,571 units. That brings its lifetime total to 80.25 million units sold since launch. The PlayStation 5 continues to dominate the market even as newer hardware enters the competition.

Nintendo’s latest system, the Switch 2, claimed second place with an estimated 1,079,013 units sold, pushing its lifetime total to 9.24 million units. Its predecessor, the original Nintendo Switch, secured third place with 311,009 units sold and now stands at 151.93 million lifetime sales. The Xbox Series X|S came in fourth with 149,337 units sold, totaling 33.68 million.

Year-over-year comparisons showed declines for most platforms. PlayStation 5 sales were down by 91,049 units compared to September 2024, a 7.3 percent drop. Xbox Series X|S saw a sharper decline of 49.3 percent, while Nintendo Switch 1 sales fell by 62.5 percent. Despite the dip, PS5 and Switch 2 remained the month’s strongest performers.

Month-to-month, PlayStation 5 sales jumped by roughly 281,000 units, while the Switch 2 dipped slightly by 34,000 units. Xbox Series X|S gained around 26,000, and the original Switch rose by about 51,000 units. The Switch 2 continues to outperform its predecessor’s early trajectory, selling 0.46 million more units in its fourth month than the Switch 1 did during the same launch window in 2017.

Regional data showed Sony dominates Europe with 488,054 PS5 units sold, while Nintendo leads Asia with 431,724 Switch 2 units. The Switch 2 sold 357,107 units in the Americas compared to the PS5’s 225,618. Oceania saw closer competition, with both consoles selling in the mid-30,000 range.

As of late 2025, the Switch 2 has sold 9.24 million units year-to-date, edging out the PS5’s 8.21 million. Meanwhile, the original Switch continues its late-cycle endurance, and Xbox Series X|S maintains steady, if limited, momentum heading into the holiday season.
