Summary

– Producer David Sahadi explained the original meaning behind the name Raw

– The title came from WWE producing television on a tight budget in the early 1990s

– Early broadcasts lacked the production elements fans associate with the show today

The origin of the name behind one of WWE’s most famous television shows has been revealed by longtime wrestling producer David Sahadi.

Sahadi discussed the program’s early days during an appearance on the 83 Weeks podcast with Eric Bischoff and Conrad Thompson. He explained that the title Raw was not originally meant to represent attitude or intensity.

The name actually reflected the company’s financial situation during the early 1990s. WWE was dealing with limited resources and was forced to produce television with a much simpler presentation.

According to Sahadi, the early broadcasts from the Manhattan Center showed just how minimal the production was. The show did not feature elaborate stages, advanced lighting, or pyrotechnics that fans associate with modern WWE programming.

“Do you know why we call that show Raw? Right now it’s such a glossy great-looking show on TV with all the LED boards and all the pyrotechnics and everything you can spare. We were not making money back then in 1992 going into 1993. So it was called RAW because we were doing it cheap. There was not a big set. There were no lights. There was no pyro. So it was raw, stripped down.”

Once the name was chosen, the company worked to shape the branding so it sounded intentional rather than tied to budget limitations.

“But we turned that into something like raw emotion, raw something else. That was my job to put a good euphemism on the word raw. But it’s really because we were losing money.”

Sahadi added that anyone who revisits those early broadcasts can easily see the difference in production value compared to today’s WWE programming.

“So raw was a euphemism for cheap. If you go back and look at those shows that were shot at the Manhattan Center and later, there’s no lighting effects, there’s no pyro, there’s nothing. There’s a little entrance they come out of that looks kind of crappy. It was raw because it was cheap.”

More than three decades later, the program has evolved into one of the most recognizable brands in sports entertainment. Modern episodes now feature massive stages, advanced technology, and large international audiences, far removed from the modest presentation that originally inspired the show’s name.
