It was reported last month that William Regal, an AEW star, may be leaving the company. This was later confirmed by Tony Khan. Today, Regal announced on Twitter that his contract with AEW has officially expired. He also shared some farewell messages with his colleagues at the company.
Yesterday was my last official day with [AEW],” Regal wrote. “I’d like to thank [Tony Khan], Megha and all the hard working crew.
In his tweet, Regal denied rumors that he was unhappy at AEW, possibly referring to reports that he was frustrated with some of the younger talent at the company not practicing with him before shows.
“Contrary to people who’ve never spoken to me or have their information from people who don’t know me or are trying to make themselves noticed, I had a lovely time working there and had a great time,” Regal continued. “Lots of talented [w]restlers, and lovely people to work for.
William Regal’s departure from AEW was depicted on TV as a double betrayal. He first turned against Moxley and his allies in the Blackpool Combat Club to join forces with Maxwell Jacob Friedman at AEW Full Gear. However, shortly after, the newly-crowned AEW World Champion MJF betrayed Regal in return on “AEW Dynamite,” causing him to be stretchered out of the arena. The following week, Regal recorded a video message for the Blackpool Combat Club, saying that he was trying to teach them a lesson about always watching their backs. This was his last appearance on AEW television. It is now believed that Regal will accept a backstage role with WWE.
