– Sutherland expressed confidence in the show’s potential.

Kiefer Sutherland, renowned for his iconic role as Jack Bauer, shared his thoughts on the evolution of the 24 franchise during a June 2016 interview. Sutherland praised the new direction of 24: Legacy, calling it a bright and refreshing take on the beloved series. As an executive producer, he was involved in early discussions with Howard Gordon about the thematic direction of the show and was impressed by the innovative ideas presented.

Sutherland highlighted the decision to move away from focusing solely on a single character like Jack Bauer. Instead, 24: Legacy would introduce multiple characters sharing the responsibilities and burdens that once fell solely on Bauer’s shoulders. This change aimed to bring a new dynamic and prevent the series from becoming repetitive, as Sutherland acknowledged the risk of putting one character through continuous extreme situations.

Reflecting on the original concept of 24, Sutherland reiterated his belief that the real-time format, where a season covers one day, was the show’s true star. He believed this unique storytelling method remained compelling and had the potential to captivate audiences with fresh perspectives. By diversifying the character focus, the writers were given a “breath of fresh air,” allowing them to explore new narratives without being constrained by the extensive history of Jack Bauer’s character.

Although Sutherland’s primary focus shifted to his new project, Designated Survivor, he strongly supported 24: Legacy. He remained optimistic about the show’s future and wished the team success, confident that the innovative approach would resonate with longtime fans and new viewers.

Sutherland’s comments reflect a deep understanding of the need for evolution within a long-running series. By embracing change and allowing new characters to take the spotlight, 24: Legacy aimed to honor the legacy of the original series while forging its path.
