During the January 12, 2024, episode of WWE SmackDown, a match between Austin Theory and Carmelo Hayes took a concerning turn. The bout had to be stopped by the referee due to an incident where both wrestlers landed awkwardly following a move from the top turnbuckle. The referee signaled the “X” position, a sign of potential injury, and waved off the match. Reports later revealed that both wrestlers suffered facial contusions due to the spot.

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Bryan Alvarez provided an update, indicating that Austin Theory is now in medical protocol, hinting that he may have been more significantly affected by the incident.

The incident unfolded as Austin Theory attempted a running Spanish Fly variation with Carmelo Hayes seated on the top turnbuckle. Unfortunately, the back of Hayes’ head collided with Theory’s face during the move, leading to the match’s stoppage. The referee promptly called for a doctor to enter the ring to assess the situation.

Carmelo Hayes had made his SmackDown debut toward the end of the previous year, participating in the WWE United States Championship No.1 Contenders Tournament. His return to the blue brand resulted in a backstage segment where he discussed his Royal Rumble chances with SmackDown GM Nick Aldis. This eventually led to a confrontation with Austin Theory and Grayson Waller, setting up the match between Hayes and Theory later in the show.
