WWE’s Decision to Discontinue NXT Women’s Tag Team Titles: A Shift in the Landscape

WWE’s NXT brand recently underwent a significant change when the Women’s Tag Team Champions were called up to the main roster. As a result, the future of the NXT Women’s Tag Team Titles became uncertain, with no discussions held regarding new champions or the relinquishment of the belts by Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn.

In an effort to unify the Women’s Tag Team Championships, WWE arranged a match that effectively eliminated the NXT Women’s Tag Team Titles from the equation. Regardless of the outcome, the main roster Superstars would ultimately hold the unified titles.

Curious about the timeline of these plans for the NXT Women’s Tag Team Titles, Ringside News reached out for clarification. According to their sources, the decision to discontinue those belts was made around the time of the 2023 WWE Draft.

NXT’s women’s division currently features a significant amount of young talent, making it challenging to sustain a robust tag team title scene at this time. While the idea of NXT Women’s Tag Team Titles remains intriguing and could potentially be revisited in the future, the immediate plan is to retire those titles.

It remains to be seen whether the WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles will also undergo a redesign, similar to the numerous other title belts that have received updated looks within the company. Triple H has spearheaded the efforts to revamp championship designs, signaling a commitment to evolving the visual identity of WWE titles.

The NXT Women’s Tag Team Titles enjoyed a respectable run, with teams such as Candice LeRae and Indi Hartwell, Dakota Kai and Raquel Rodriguez, Toxic Attraction, and Katana Chance and Kayden Carter holding the gold. Currently, all of these teams have either transitioned to the main roster or disbanded. In hindsight, the titles were fortunate not to be rendered obsolete when Cora Jade symbolically discarded her title, an act that often signifies the end of a championship’s relevance in the world of professional wrestling.
