Becky Lynch, celebrated for her tenacity inside and outside the ring, recently shared details about the creative process behind her memorable pregnancy announcement on Monday Night RAW in 2020. Speaking with Vulture, the former RAW Women’s Champion revealed that the original pitch for the segment was far from what fans ultimately saw.
During the actual segment, Lynch vacated the RAW Women’s Title, naming Asuka—who had just won Money in the Bank—the new champion. The emotional announcement resonated with fans, but Lynch disclosed that the original idea was dramatically different and, as she described it, very bad.
“They wanted me coming out and challenging the backstage interviewer. Then Asuka would come out, and I’d say all these elaborate, robust words. It was bad. It was just very bad,” Lynch explained. At the time, she was in the early stages of her pregnancy, which heightened her emotions. “I was ready to punch somebody,” she joked, reflecting on how pregnancy hormones added to her frustration.
Lynch chose to push back, a decision she doesn’t regret. “You got to know what hills to die on. When you’re in the early weeks of pregnancy, you don’t know those hills. You’ll die on all of them. I was ready to fight, and I fought,” she said. Her determination led to the heartfelt moment fans remember today, a departure from the initial pitch’s chaotic tone.
The segment, widely regarded as one of the most genuine and touching moments in WWE history, stands as a testament to Lynch’s commitment to authenticity. Her fight to protect the integrity of the moment ensured it resonated deeply with fans worldwide.
