The upcoming season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon — The Book of Carol promises to deliver an exciting mix of familiar faces and fresh dangers. While fans were thrilled to see Daryl and Carol back together in the trailer, the introduction of bioluminescent zombies has left audiences buzzing. These new walkers, glowing with eerie light, mark another step in the show’s evolution as it pushes boundaries within the genre.

Greg Nicotero, the show’s executive producer and the mastermind behind its iconic undead, shared how his team created these glowing “hungry ones” using practical effects and visual wizardry. “Seventy percent of that was practical effects,” Nicotero tells Entertainment Weekly. “We used LED lights and a special black light-activated bioluminescent paint to bring these zombies to life.” The effects team layered silicone prosthetics with the paint, while visual effects enhanced the bioluminescence, spreading it across the cave walls.

But the glowing zombies aren’t the only new breed of undead featured this season. The show will also continue to explore the terrifying “ampers,” zombies injected with a mysterious substance that makes them super-fast. Nicotero explained that these ampers, with their distinct black contact lenses and veiny appearance, will play a critical role in the story. Inspired by his previous work on The Faculty and Scanners, Nicotero wanted to push the boundaries of what fans expect from The Walking Dead.

“The fast zombies pay homage to the horror genre’s roots, blending in elements from 28 Days Later and Asian horror,” Nicotero explains while still ensuring the creatures feel like they belong in The Walking Dead universe.

With these new walkers, season 2 of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon promises to elevate the tension and terror when it premieres on September 29 on AMC.
