The Broom Test: Prichard Recounts Bischoff’s Unique WWE Audition

A Glimpse into Eric Bischoff’s Unexpected Interview Challenge with WWE

In a recent episode of “Something To Wrestle With Bruce Prichard,” the wrestling aficionado delved into a rather peculiar moment from the annals of WWE’s hiring process. Eric Bischoff, before his rise to prominence in WCW, had once auditioned for a role in WWE. And the audition was anything but ordinary.

Prichard recounted how WWE, always on the lookout for fresh on-air talent, had invited Bischoff for an interview and audition. The process took place in Stanford, possibly during the construction phase of the iconic Titan Towers. While the interview had its standard elements, there was a twist. Bischoff, along with other candidates, was handed a broom and given a simple yet challenging task: sell it.

The broom test, as Prichard explained, was designed to gauge an individual’s ability to sell on camera in an impromptu setting. Whether the candidate chose to sell the broom as a cleaning tool or transform it into a magical entity, the goal was to assess their creativity and adaptability.

While some, like Sean Mooney, excelled in this unique challenge, Bischoff’s attempt is now part of wrestling folklore. Despite the memorable audition, Bischoff didn’t secure a position with WWE at the time. However, he soon found his footing in WCW, initially as an announcer and later ascending to the role of executive producer.

Prichard’s recounting offers a fascinating insight into the unpredictable world of wrestling, where even a broom can become a pivotal prop in one’s career journey.
