AEW’s Memphis Move: Behind the Delayed Announcement

WWE’s Contractual Clauses Impact Rival Wrestling Promotions

The wrestling world was abuzz when AEW unveiled plans for an event in Memphis, Tennessee, set for October 21. However, the timing of this announcement raised eyebrows, and the reason traces back to WWE’s strategic contractual agreements.

Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter highlighted the situation, highlighting WWE’s unique contracts with arenas. These contracts contain clauses that restrict the arenas from advertising or announcing events associated with rival wrestling companies for a specified duration before and after a WWE event.

To put this into perspective, WWE showcased its Monday Night RAW at the FedEx Forum in Memphis on August 28. This meant that AEW had to wait for an approximate 15-day window post the WWE event to make their announcement for the same venue.

The newsletter stated:

> “AEW’s recent announcement for the 10/21 event in Memphis came later than usual. This delay can be attributed to WWE’s arena contracts, which prevent the simultaneous sale of tickets for both companies. With RAW having taken place on 8/28, it seems there’s a 15-day buffer before another wrestling event can be publicized.”

This revelation isn’t groundbreaking, as such agreements have been previously reported. It underscores the fierce competition in the wrestling domain, where giants like AEW and WWE are in a constant tussle for prime venues and the spotlight.

We’d love to hear from you! Do you believe such contractual ties between wrestling entities and venues curb competition and limit fans from experiencing a diverse range of wrestling events? Drop your thoughts in the comments.
