ESPN Mulls Over a Game-Changing WWE TV Rights Deal

The Wrestling Giant’s Broadcast Future Hangs in the Balance

ESPN has emerged as a potential game-changer for WWE. As the wrestling behemoth’s current contracts with USA Network and FOX approach their endgame, the sports broadcasting titan has hinted at stepping into the ring for a television rights deal.

Nick Khan, WWE’s CEO, is in the thick of discussions regarding the future media rights deals for flagship shows RAW and SmackDown. With the exclusive negotiation window with existing broadcasters now closed, WWE is flexing its muscles, exploring potential partnerships beyond its traditional confines.

Interestingly, the house of Mickey Mouse, Disney, has thrown its hat into the ring, expressing interest in bringing WWE programming to FX. This strategic move seems to be a pivot from ESPN, given the latter’s jam-packed roster of sports broadcasts, including heavy-hitters like the NFL, NBA, and MLB.

Burke Magnus, the top brass at ESPN, recently shed light on this during his stint on “Sports Media with Richard Deitsch.” He acknowledged a paradigm shift in ESPN’s viewpoint towards WWE, emphasizing that if the stars align in terms of a mutually beneficial deal, WWE could very well find a home at ESPN. However, he was quick to point out the logistical challenges, given WWE’s relentless 52-week-a-year schedule. Yet, the digital realm offers a silver lining, with possibilities in streaming, direct-to-consumer offerings, and pay-per-view distributions.

Fans are abuzz with speculation as the clock ticks down on WWE’s current television contracts. The landscape of wrestling broadcasts is on the cusp of evolution, and all eyes are on where RAW and SmackDown will drop their next elbow.
