PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch dominate the global market, while Xbox Series X|S reaches a significant milestone
In the competitive landscape of gaming consoles, the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch continue to lead the pack, according to VGChartz estimates for June 2023. The PlayStation 5 emerged as the best-selling console worldwide, with 1,468,959 units sold, bringing its lifetime sales to an estimated 39.64 million units.
Not far behind, the Nintendo Switch sold an estimated 1,406,594 units, pushing its lifetime sales to a whopping 127.70 million units. Meanwhile, the Xbox Series X|S sold 552,614 units, bringing their lifetime sales to 22.36 million units. The PlayStation 4, although no longer the latest model, managed to sell an estimated 24,640 units, bringing its lifetime sales to 117.07 million units.
Interestingly, when comparing the sales of the PlayStation 5 to the same month for the PlayStation 4 in 2016, the PS5 sales were up by over 480,000 units. Similarly, the Xbox Series X|S sales compared to the same month for the Xbox One were up by over 32,000 units.
Looking at sales month-on-month, PlayStation 5 sales saw an increase of over 473,000 units, Xbox Series X|S sales rose by over 222,000 units, while Nintendo Switch sales saw a slight decrease of nearly 41,000 units.
As for the year-to-date figures for 2023, the PlayStation 5 has sold an estimated 8.64 million units, the Nintendo Switch has sold 7.14 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S has sold 2.77 million units.
The gaming industry continues to thrive, with each console bringing unique offerings to the table. As the competition heats up, seeing how these figures evolve in the coming months will be interesting.
