Jerry Lawler’s Recovery from Stroke Falls Short of Expectations

The Wrestling Icon’s Health Takes a Hit as He Battles Lingering Effects

WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler, a beloved figure known for his distinct voice, continues to hold a special place in the hearts of fans. Though no longer a regular commentator, Lawler makes occasional guest appearances, leaving lasting memories. However, concerns have arisen as his recovery from a recent stroke seems to be less than satisfactory.

Lawler’s health struggles have garnered widespread attention, notably his life-threatening heart attack during a Monday Night RAW broadcast in 2012, which temporarily led Michael Cole to step in. Earlier this year, Lawler was rushed to the hospital after suffering a stroke, causing paralysis shortly before the incident.

Following his hospitalization, Lawler underwent surgery and was expected to make a full recovery. However, he recently required additional surgery, raising further concerns about his health.

Pro wrestling veteran Dutch Mantell shared insights on Jerry Lawler’s condition after the stroke during a segment of Story Time. Mantell revealed that Lawler’s recovery progress has been less than optimal.

“I have heard, this is news on Jerry Lawler. You know, his recent stroke that he had in February that put him in the hospital almost killed him, and he’s had some more mini-strokes along the way. He is much better, but still not recovering as well as they would hope. He has trouble finishing sentences. I mean, he talks well. His voice has changed somewhat. He talks, but when he gets to the end of the sentence, he starts searching for words to end the sentence and he gets frustrated.”

Lawler’s struggles extend beyond speech impediments. The stroke, which affected the left side of his body, caused his right-hand difficulties. This hindrance has particularly affected his art, which Lawler is known for. Frustrated by his diminished abilities, Lawler was unable to attend WrestleMania as he was not medically cleared to travel. Mantell went on to express his belief that Lawler may have made his final appearance on RAW.

“If there is any, and I hope I’m wrong, but if there’s any indication that he may not be able to do it, if there is like a 5% chance that something might happen, he’s not doing it because if something happened on RAW, can you imagine how badly RAW would get roasted for having him on there after having those strokes? Jerry, we have the same birthday, same year, same day. I say that all the time. I used to call him my cosmic brother, but I hope he gets better and I hope he’s okay.”

Lawler did make an appearance at the 2023 WWE Hall of Fame during Andy Kaufman’s induction speech. However, his presence was through a pre-taped video message recorded from his home. Wrestling fans continue to send their best wishes to Jerry Lawler, hoping for his complete recovery in the near future.
