AEW’s Attempt to Sign Sean Waltman: A WWE Lifer’s Near Miss
In a surprising twist, All Elite Wrestling (AEW) has been making waves by bringing in notable names, including a few who were believed to be WWE loyalists. However, their attempt to acquire another renowned WWE figure didn’t come to fruition.
As previously reported, AEW made efforts to bring Sean Waltman, also known as X-Pac, into the promotion for an angle. Contrary to speculation, this was not just a fabrication by Billy Gunn.
During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer shed light on AEW’s pursuit of Sean Waltman. According to Meltzer, the company made two separate attempts to bring him in, but unfortunately, the deals fell through.
“It’s not something current. He was last talked to in October, and in May. So, May and October of last year. So, it’s not something that’s being currently talked about. It’s something that happened, we didn’t even hear about at the time. Never got very far. It was never on paper. At different points, there was an idea for a singular appearance, not for a full-time deal. Maybe something to play off Billy Gunn and The Acclaimed. Obviously, with a phone call that could change, but it isn’t anything that there has been any talk since October in that direction.”
The future remains to be determined as to whether AEW will eventually bring Sean Waltman on board for a specific role. While there were initial discussions, the negotiations failed to progress beyond the preliminary stage.
AEW fans would undoubtedly relish the opportunity to see Sean Waltman grace their screens, given his significant history with Billy Gunn. However, X-Pac may be hesitant to burn bridges with WWE, potentially influencing his decision to refrain from joining Tony Khan’s company.
As the wrestling landscape continues to evolve, only time will reveal if Sean Waltman’s path will lead him to AEW or if he will pursue alternative opportunities.
