There are many plans in the works as WWE heads towards WrestleMania, and the creative potential of the roster still needs to be exhausted, according to Triple H. However, some previously planned ideas that could have excited long-time fans were scrapped.
One such plan was for the return of Finn Balor’s “Demon King” persona, which would have included a Hell in a Cell match at the Royal Rumble. Unfortunately, the idea had to be abandoned due to Edge’s scheduling conflicts with filming the Percy Jackson Disney+ show.
According to Sean Sapp of Fightful Select, there is much more to the story than what was previously reported.
Based on internal plans, not only was Edge vs. Finn Balor listed as a Hell in a Cell match for WWE Royal Rumble, but the Demon version of Finn Balor was slated to perform. Balor has used the persona seven times in WWE on the main roster, last appearing at WWE Extreme Rules in a loss to WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns. It became a Summerslam staple for a few years, but has never been uncorked at a Royal Rumble.
Some that we spoke to felt as if the Demon persona didn’t fit during the current iteration of Judgment Day, and were against it in this situation. While others felt like that match would have needed the extra buzz of it returning.
It remains to be seen if and when the “Demon King” will make his return to WWE television, as Finn Balor’s current persona, “The Judgment Day,” is still going strong. However, it is reassuring to know that WWE has the option to bring back the fan-favorite character if needed.
